A YEAR AGO

Today I, TA Staffer Becky, remember the Midnight Sun leak and reflect on what Twilight has meant to me over the past year.

A year ago. Its been that long. It has been more then a year since I first picked up a copy of Twilight, joined a Twilight fansite, and since the Twilight fandom received heart breaking news. One thing we most wanted, most desired, aside from Edward Cullen himself, was taken away from us.
On August 28, 2008, Stephenie Meyer broke the news to the world that someone had taken the copy of the first 12 chapters she had written of her next book and posted them on the net without her permission. That book was to have been Midnight Sun, a retelling of the story of Twilight from the perspective of Edward, the brooding, beautiful vampire in love with Bella, the human girl, who he was attracted to from the moment he saw her.

Breaking Dawn had just been released and everyone wanted to talk about ending of the Saga and what would come next. Fans wanted to know what it was that Edward had been thinking during the beginning of his relationship with Bella. Meyer had already posted an unedited version of the first chapter as a taste for her fans. She used this first chapter and the others she had written to help her write Twilight. A copy of these chapters had been given to various people for critique and comment. Then rumors began to circulate. The chapters were online. Some fans searched for them, while others ran in the other direction. Whispers were heard all over the fandom.

Finally, Meyer had enough. With a statement on her website, she told the world that her work had been leaked by someone that had been trusted with it but refused to name the person. What had been seen only by a limited number of people was available for anyone to find and read though it was messy and unedited. She said she would post the pages on her site so her fans didn’t have to feel dishonest about reading the material.

MS is an amazing book that fills in so many gaps in Twilight.  The sadness is shared by all of us. Thank you for posting. *hug* It's an unfinished necessity that I fear will never be finished.

Reading all 4 books and then the 300 or so pages of MS without an end reminds me of Traveler who had a well mapped out journey that took months or even years. When he was within a few short miles of completing the journey he was stopped short by a cliff that ended 300 feet straight down - the end of the journey could be clearly seen on the other side but the bridge from his end to the other had been burned. Unable to complete the journey the Traveler steps off the cliff to his death. Tragic

It's really so sad, that it got leaked..
I think SM is so kind to not even name the person who leaked it..
I'm guessing she considered the fact that, that person would be hated for what had happened..
And I guess that's so nice of her..
I wish that she would still continue writing it, because if not, we will be forever guessing what ran on Edward's mind during those times..
and that is something I don't want to make my imagination handle..

It's so sad that MS was leaked. SM was so nice to not name the person and to share the chapters with us, the fans, on her website. I read the chapters on her website and absolutely loved them. I'm afraid that they might never be published though.

i will support SM and whatever she decides about MS's future even though i want nothing else but for her to finish it.

I too am anxious to read MS however i will wait until SM finishes the book
I think it was horrendous that anyone would betray her trust in them and do that to her
it's like shoving a knife in to her while she is smiling right at you. It's just wrong we love you Stephanie and are waiting patiently here is Arizona

It's such shame what people will do with information they have. MS would be such an awesome book and a lot of people would love to hear Edwards side. I wish SM would reconsider finishing this for her fans.

Thanks all! I cant believe its been a year either that this all happened. Its been a wild ride and I cant wait for what's next. I do hope that one day Meyer publishes MS the way she intended. That will be an awesome day!

i'm still hopeful! there's always hope! something as special as MS deserves to be published in all its glory. it's like finding ancient treasure and finding out it's missing one last gem to complete it. *sigh*
