TA TALKS BACK: FANFIC & FANFIX

Today, TA member LJ Summers continues part two of her brief exploration of fan fiction. Today’s installment includes “FanFic & FanFix”.

FanFic & FanFix By: LJ Summers

A brief exploration of Fan Fiction

Part the Second

In the first part of this explanation, I introduced the term “fanficking.” My off-the-cuff definition went like this:

Fanficking: Verb. To be in the process of creating, enjoying or responding to fan fiction.
Today, I’d like to address the “creating” part of fanficking. Daydreaming, writing, sharing posting, blogging… All of it comes under this heading.

For many people, the realm of the Twilightverse is inspirational, in all senses of that word. People breathe the world of Twilight. They also breathe life into alternate universes of The Saga. They do this for a variety of reasons. Some want to explore more deeply the potential for “missing moments” in The Saga. Others want to look into the backstories of their favorite characters. Still others wish to extend the story, in or out of canon practices, to see “What happened when….”

A part of this that really took me a while to warm up to was the All Human realm. I guess I personally took the characters in instant aversion as humans. I don’t know why. However, before you go throwing things at me or your computer screen, please know I have changed my opinion. Yes, I have. I didn’t think I would, but I did.

Some of the most beautiful pieces of All Human fanfic are those in which we find Edward is damaged. Okay, maybe I’m the only one who thinks these pieces are beautiful. But they strike me because the author of the AH fanfic sees that Edward Cullen views himself as damaged in canon. As a monster. As something unworthy of Bella’s regard. He is damaged, in that respect. The All Human authors take that flawed part of his character and create amazing stories from it. I have my favorites, and I’ll bet you do, too. Not only is Edward flawed, but pretty much each of the stars of The Saga has an AH story devoted to him or her, exploring their strengths and weaknesses.

It’s beautiful.

LJ loves this article. You hit on points that I think everyone has thought or read about. I feel myself being swept into the fan fic world and addicting to reading the stories.

We have some very talented writers here including you. Love the stories. Keep them coming.

Jill -- We have some amazing writers here at TA!  I so enjoy the community!  And thank you.  Even hanging out on book-discussion boards, I sense a lot of frustrated oughta-be fanfickers. Smiley

ELP -- I'm glad I'm not the only one who had AH issues. LOL  Next article... Yeah. I might take a poll for that one. Smiley I'll ask Val how to do that. lol  Thanks!

This is what I added to the comment section of the article:

Quote
Fan FIXING...yep...I've read so many stories that try to do just that!  One would think that FOUR books in the Twilight SAGA would be enough...but it's just NOT!  I have to admit that I was looking for some of those *missing moments* when I stumbled upon fan fiction.

I started writing because there was an AU (alternate universe) story that just wouldn't leave my mind. I wasn't looking to FIX the Saga, but I did want to take it in another direction. I had no clue that other people would enjoy reading my words, but once they did, I found myself ADDICTED to the give and take of fan fiction.

One of the many wonderful things that LJ said, that I totally agree with, is that there are FANFICKERS all over the world! It's one thing to see the stats on Stephenie's book salees, how many are sold and where.  But it's another thing to check my stats and see that I have readers from 71 (yes...71) countries!

Everyone is looking for their FIX...either in MORE of the story...or in stories that FIX things they think were wrong.

Yes, ADDICTED...and happy to be FIXING and getting my FIX of Twilight!

Thanks, Angela, glad you like GUARDING EDWARD!

I agree also with not always enjoying the ALL HUMAN fics...but I've found some really fun, funny, touching ones too.

Hey, at this point, I pretty much read a LOT of fan fiction, with very few exceptions...got to feed that addiction!

I’m not used to feeling so human. Is it always like this?
